Steel Industry — Nitrogen Applications

Nitrogen is one of the most essential gases in modern steelmaking. From the initial ironmaking stage to final finishing processes, nitrogen serves as a protective atmosphere, a process gas, and a safety medium. The steel industry consumes significant volumes of nitrogen, typically requiring purities between 99.5% and 99.999% depending on the application.

1. Annealing and Heat Treatment

In batch and continuous annealing furnaces, nitrogen-based atmospheres prevent oxidation and decarburization of steel surfaces. Bright annealing of stainless steel strips requires nitrogen with less than 10 ppm oxygen to maintain the characteristic bright surface finish. Nitrogen-hydrogen mixed atmospheres (typically 95% N₂ + 5% H₂) are commonly used for specialized heat treatment cycles.

Typical parameters: Nitrogen purity 99.99%, dew point below -60°C, flow rate 50-500 Nm³/h depending on furnace size.

2. Continuous Casting

During continuous casting of steel, nitrogen seals the molten steel surface in the tundish and mold to prevent reoxidation and slag entrainment. Nitrogen also protects the casting stream from air contact between the ladle and tundish. This significantly reduces inclusion levels in the final product.

3. Blast Furnace Injection

Nitrogen-assisted pulverized coal injection (PCI) improves coal combustion efficiency in blast furnaces, reducing coke consumption by 10-15%. Nitrogen also serves as the carrier gas for injecting various additives into the blast furnace.

4. Laser and Plasma Cutting

High-pressure nitrogen (10-25 bar) is used as the assist gas in laser cutting of stainless steel and aluminum. The nitrogen pressure blows away molten material while preventing oxidation of the cut edge, producing clean, dross-free cuts that require no secondary processing.

5. Galvanizing Lines

In continuous hot-dip galvanizing lines, nitrogen atmosphere in the annealing furnace section prevents oxidation of the steel strip before zinc coating. The nitrogen atmosphere ensures excellent zinc adhesion and a uniform coating surface.

Coal Industry — Nitrogen Applications

1. Mine Fire Prevention and Control

Spontaneous combustion of coal in underground mines is a major safety hazard. Nitrogen injection into goaf areas (mined-out zones) displaces oxygen and prevents the exothermic oxidation reaction that leads to coal fires. A typical nitrogen injection system for a coal mine delivers 600-2000 Nm³/h of nitrogen at 97-99% purity.

Case example: A large coal mine in Shanxi province installed a Hongbo PSA nitrogen generator producing 1500 Nm³/h at 98% purity. The system reduced goaf temperature from 45°C to below 30°C within 72 hours of continuous nitrogen injection, successfully preventing a potential coal fire.

2. Coal Bed Methane (CBM) Enhancement

Nitrogen-enhanced coal bed methane recovery involves injecting nitrogen into coal seams to increase methane desorption and flow. The nitrogen displaces methane from the coal matrix, improving gas recovery rates by 30-80% compared to pressure depletion alone.

3. Coal Mill Inerting

Pulverized coal preparation plants use nitrogen to inert coal mills, cyclones, and bag filters. The inerting system maintains oxygen levels below 12% (the explosion limit for coal dust) throughout the milling and classification process. Automatic oxygen monitoring with fast-acting nitrogen injection valves ensures immediate response to oxygen breakthroughs.

4. Coal Gasification

In coal gasification plants, nitrogen is used for purging and inerting of gasification reactors, syngas coolers, and downstream equipment during startup, shutdown, and maintenance operations.
